10 Helpful Tips to Prevent Colds and the Flu

As the weather gets cooler, the cold and flu become the #1 enemy of people. Here are some useful tips for you to avoid sickness:

#1. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 10 seconds.
--Most cold and flu viruses are spread by direct contact. Washing your hands throughout the day is a very important rule. You must scrub your hands for at least 10 seconds, especially right before you touch your face, mouth, and food.

#2. Don’t Cover your Sneezes and Coughs With Your Hands.
--Since germs and viruses cling to your bare hands, muffling coughs and sneezes with your hands results in passing your germs to others.

#3. Sleep Earlier and Never Sleep with an Open Window.
--Try to sleep before 11 pm. It is a good habit that will restore your vital energy by following the Yin Yang balance theory. There will be less chance for you to catch a cold/flu if you do so. The chills coming from the open window can lower your immune system’s defenses.

#4. Drink Plenty of Fluids.
--Water flushes out your system, plus, it washes out the toxins in your body as it re-hydrates you. Green tea / White tea will be the best choices. Usually we need about 8 Cup of water daily. You can see this in your urine. If your urine color runs deep yellow, you need more fluids.

#5. Don’t Run Out With Wet Hair.
--Wet hair tends to hold the dampness and coldness from your hair to your head and neck. TCM theory states that this will invade the body’s defense system.

#6. Don’t Wear Sandals or Slippers During the Winter Period.
--Cold air is claimed to be the main reason why you get a cold or the flu. Keeping your feet warm will strengthen your adrenalin function.

#7. Stay Away From Greasy Foods and Sugar.
--Eating healthy, with warm, grease-free, easily digestible food, is the best way to keep your Middle Jiao (center body) clean, in order to maintain a good decency ability of “Qi”. Some studies show that eating low-fat yogurt daily could decrease the chance of catching a cold by 25%.

#8. Cut Alcohol Consumption and Don’t Smoke.
--Alcohol destroys the liver, the body’s primary filter system. This means that germs of all kinds won’t leave. Alcohol also dehydrates the body. Heavy smokers get more colds, more severely than non-smokers. However, both alcohol and smoking can profoundly lower the body’s immune system.

#9. Steam Black Vinegar.
--Around the cold season, boil black rice vinegar every night for 10 minutes and try to let the vapor travel around the whole house. This is a natural disinfection ‘air spray.’

#10. Visit an Acupuncturist Right Away.
--The first day you come down with a cold, visit an acupuncturist right away! Your cold will be gone before you know it.
