Autumn Wellness: Embrace Renewal and Balance with Acupuncture

Updated: Sep 18

Autumn is a time of powerful transitions, both in nature and in our bodies. As the days grow shorter and the air becomes cooler, the natural world prepares for a season of rest and rejuvenation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), autumn is associated with the metal element, which governs the lungs and large intestine. These organs are essential for respiration, immune function, and the elimination of toxins, and they play a vital role in maintaining both physical and emotional balance.

As we move into this season, it is an ideal time to focus on letting go—whether it’s releasing physical toxins or emotional burdens that may be weighing us down. The practice of acupuncture can help support this process by encouraging balance within the body’s systems, especially those associated with the metal element.

The Emotional and Physical Themes of Autumn

In TCM, each season is associated with specific organs and emotions. For autumn, the lungs and large intestine are the focus, and they are linked to the emotions of grief and letting go. This is the time of year to reflect on what may no longer serve us—whether that’s old habits, unhelpful routines, or unresolved emotions. By acknowledging and releasing these, we create space for renewal and growth.

The lungs are considered Yin, responsible for taking in new energy through respiration and supporting the immune system. The Large Intestine is considered Yang and is responsible for eliminating waste, both physically and emotionally. When these systems are in balance, we are better equipped to handle the changes that come with the season. However, imbalances can manifest as symptoms such as respiratory issues, fatigue, digestive problems, and feelings of sadness or grief.

Signs of Imbalance

During the autumn season, imbalances in the lungs and large intestine can result in a variety of symptoms, including:

- Frequent colds or respiratory infections

- Allergies or asthma

- Fatigue and low energy

- Sinus issues

- Digestive irregularities, such as constipation or diarrhea

- Emotional challenges, such as difficulty letting go of the past

If any of these symptoms arise, it may indicate that the body requires some attention! Acupuncture, along with other supportive practices, can help restore balance.

Seasonal Wellness Practices for Autumn

To support health and wellness during the autumn season, consider incorporating the following practices:

1. Warm and Nourishing Foods: As the weather cools, it’s natural to shift towards heartier, warming foods. In TCM, warm foods help nourish the body’s organs and keep energy flowing smoothly. Pungent foods such as garlic, onions, ginger, radishes, scallions, etc. are particularly beneficial for lung health, helping to prevent colds and flu. White color foods, including Asian pears, snow ear fungus, lily bulb, and cauliflower, are known to be protective of the lungs and can help soothe respiratory issues.

2. Wake Up with the Sun: Sleeping early will benefit the storage of Yin essence and prevent Yang Qi from becoming hyperactive. Get up early to coordinate with the expansion of Yang Yi in the morning so that Lung Qi will not be suppressed. As you get up early, make sure to also get out and soak up 10 minutes of sunlight for Vitamin D boost!

3. Breathing Exercises for Lung Health: Practicing breathing exercises can strengthen the lungs and promote better overall health. Qi Gong, guided breathwork, or meditation are great ways to protect the Lungs!

4. Maintain Regular Digestion: A healthy large intestine is crucial for eliminating waste and maintaining overall health. Maintain healthy digestion with a well-balanced diet filled with seasonal foods as well. If digestive issues arise, such as constipation or bloating, consider acupuncture and herbs!

5. Try Soaking your Feet in Warm to Hot Water before bed:  Ideally, let the water soak up to your knees or at least above your ankles. Wearing socks is also important especially for elder people, kids, and women with PMS; keeping feet warm can warm up the channel as well.

The Mid-Autumn Festival: A Time of Reflection

Autumn is also marked by the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, a time of reunion and reflection. Known as Mooncake Day, this festival celebrates the harvest and the blessings of the year. It encourages a focus on gratitude, balance, and the release of what no longer serves us—aligning beautifully with the themes of autumn in TCM.

As the season of change continues, take the opportunity to reflect on your own well-being. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine offer a holistic approach to maintaining health during this time of transition, supporting both the body and mind in releasing the old and embracing the new.

Well Wishes and Health To All!
